Literacy Builders is the labor of love
Literacy Builders began when Kim Yaris, our founder and executive director, left her position as an elementary classroom teacher to launch her career as a literacy staff developer. Literacy Builders began small, primarily focused on providing school districts in the New York metropolitan area with top-quality professional development. Over the years, Literacy Builders has our vision and reach has expanded but our mission remains the same: to assist children in becoming proficient readers and writers.
In 2012, Kim partnered with Jan Burkins, founder of Literacyhead, and together they began blogging at Burkins & Yaris. Their blog attracted a national audience and positioned them as thought leaders in the field of literacy instruction.
Kim and Jan’s first book together, Reading Wellness (Stenouse, 2014), shares field-tested, practical lessons designed to meet the rigorous demands of the Common Core while increasing joy in classrooms. Their second book, Who’s Doing the Work (Stenhouse, 2016), looks at ways scaffolding may interfere with learning opportunities and offers small but powerful adjustments that positively impact student learning. Currently, we provide a multitude of professional development services–from curriculum writing to classroom coaching–to school districts across the United States.
