AYP is an acronym for Adequate Yearly Progress, a mandate stemming from No Child Left Behind that requires schools to document the reading growth and proficiency of their struggling readers. The ultimate goal of adequate yearly progress is to close the achievement gap between struggling and proficient readers by providing instruction that helps strugglers to gain more than a year’s growth in a given school year.
