Basal Reader

A basal reader is a reading textbook that presents skills in a strict, predetermined sequence. Basal readers contain stories with limited, controlled vocabulary. Usually part of a primary and intermediate grade series, basal readers are arranged in anthologies of previously published stories, excerpts of longer narratives, and original works.
