Benchmark/Benchmark Assessment -- Literacy A-Z

Benchmark/Benchmark Assessment

A benchmark is a standard against which performance can be measured. In reading and writing, a benchmark helps teachers determine whether students are meeting, exceeding, approaching, or falling below the standards established for each grade level.

A benchmark assessment is a tool used to obtain information about student performance in reading and writing.

In reading, teachers rely on any number of commercially produced IRIs, reading surveys, and inventories to provide feedback about students’ independent, instructional, and frustration level with text. Some widely used assessments include: The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System, the DRA, and the QRI.
