Very simply stated, comprehension is how well one understands what is read.    It is the process of both extracting meaning and constructing meaning that readers engage in before, during, and after reading. 
 
In order to make meaning from reading, readers employ a number of strategies including:
Developing the ability to use these strategies effectively helps readers to delve deeper into their reading experiences. Fully understanding the intended meaning of a text makes reading a rich and satisfying experience.
