Drafting -- Literacy A-Z

Drafting

Drafting is the way in which writers capture ideas and the details that support those ideas. It is the process required to organize thoughts into a text that communicates ideas to readers.

Drafting is the outgrowth of much thought and exploration. In a writing workshop classroom, children begin to draft after they have explored many ideas in their writing notebooks and have selected the seed for the piece they wish to write.

Because it is an ongoing process of revision, drafting usually assumes the largest percentage of time in a writing workshop unit of study.
