Explicit Teaching -- Literacy A-Z

Explicit Teaching

Explicit Teaching is the point during a mini lesson when the teacher explains WHAT she wants students to learn and WHY this learning is relevant and important. Explicit teaching streamlines instruction, enabling teaching points to be disseminated effectively and efficiently.

An example of an explicit teaching point: When readers read they visualize (WHAT). Getting a picture in your head helps you to know that your reading is making sense and allows you to go deeper into the text to make meaning (WHY).

Explicit teaching is generally followed by a model and guided practice piece that provide further clarification of the point being addressed.
