Frustration (Reading Level) -- Literacy A-Z

Frustration

When a child is no longer able to decode, analyze, and evaluate text, he is said to have reached his frustration level.

When reading A-K level texts, frustration is reached when the text is read with 90-94% accuracy and a child demonstrates limited or unsatisfactory comprehension or when a child can read with greater accuracy but demonstrates no comprehension. Anything read below 90% accuracy at this level is deemed to be a frustration level text even if the child has excellent or satisfactory comprehension.

For children reading at level L or higher, frustration is determined when a child can read with 98% or better accuracy but has unsatisfactory comprehension. If a child reads with 95-97% accuracy and shows limited or unsatisfactory comprehension, that text, too, is a frustration level text. In level L-Z, anything read below 95% accuracy is deemed to be too difficult even if the child demonstrates some level of comprehension of the text.
