Gradual Release of Responsibility -- Literacy A-Z

Gradual Release of Responsibility

Gradual Release of Responsibility is an instructional model based on research by Pearson and Gallagher that shifts responsibility of learning from the teacher to the student over time. The model encourages teachers to begin instruction by modeling so that children can see someone else practicing the skill or strategy being taught. Then, children try it together with the support of the teacher (guided practice) and when they are ready, students move on to practicing the skill or strategy independently.
