Guided Reading -- Literacy A-Z

Guided Reading

Guided Reading is an important component of a balanced literacy framework. This small group structure provides students the opportunity to develop the reading strategies needed to be able to read increasingly difficult text.

Guided reading groups are fast-paced and dynamic, offering participants many opportunities to synthesize and practice the skills and strategies needed for developing greater reading proficiency. Frequency and duration of groups depend on the needs of the group members (which change according to individual student progress) but during each guided reading session, teachers can expect:
  • To work with a group of students with like or similar needs
  • To engage students in conversation before reading the book to raise questions and build expectations
  • Students will read independently and silently during which time they will listen in and take notes about individual student reading behaviors
  • To talk with students after they have read to assess children’s understanding, invite personal response, and support children’s path to deeper understanding

Guided reading is a teacher-facilitated session in which students practice the skills and strategies needed for developing greater reading proficiencies. During these sessions, teachers document reading progress and behaviors and provide support as needed. These sessions enable student to read increasingly challenging texts “on the run” and provide the guidance needed to build the fluency, skill, motivation and confidence of all readers.
