IRI -- Literacy A-Z
IRI
An IRI, or informal reading inventory, is an individually administered survey used to determine the reading strengths and weaknesses of students. During this assessment, a teacher sits in a quiet area with each individual student and asks the child to read words from leveled word lists as well as a series of short passages. The IRI is intended to provide insight about word recognition, word meanings, reading strategies, comprehension, and fluency. This information is in turn used by teachers to develop targeted instruction that best meets the needs of the readers in a group or classroom.
