Background Knowledge

Background knowledge, or schema, is what people bring to text to help them better understand and interact with their reading. When readers call upon their experiences (places they’ve been, things they’ve done, books they’ve read, movies they’ve watched) they are able to make connections that bring them deeper into their reading and engage them in a way that is meaningful and motivating.
