Book Club -- Literacy A-Z

Book Club

The term book club, used interchangeably with literature circle, is a small group of students gathered together to experience and explore a carefully chosen text together. Book clubs allow students to collaborate and engage in in-depth, thought-provoking conversations about shared texts. Unlike guided reading groups or strategy groups where the teacher carefully plans the direction of instruction, book clubs are student-centered. The discussion is guided by students’ insights and questions as opposed to a pre-determined curriculum focus or strategy.

In book clubs, members come together to choose a book that they are interested in reading. They schedule predictable meeting times to gather to share their thinking and shape their views about the common text. Groups are temporary and flexible. Upon completing a title, groups may shuffle members, keeping some and releasing others to different groups.
