Editing -- Literacy A-Z

Editing

During the editing phase of writing workshop, students are asked to check their work for the conventions of print that they are accountable for knowing. Depending on the grade level or what is developmentally appropriate for a given population of students, children will search their writing for errors in spelling, capital letters, punctuation, and grammatical constructions.

The term “editing” is often used broadly by teachers and students to encompass whatever work is required to make a piece of writing better. It is important to help children understand the distinction between revising and editing.

Revising is about author’s craft—the work of thinking about what writers do to achieve a certain sound or style. Editing is about uniformity—making a piece of writing subscribe to rules of standard written English so that it is easily read and consumed by the masses.
