Preview -- Literacy A-Z

Preview

Previewing is the work that people do before they begin reading to support meaning making during the reading process.

When instructing students how to preview, it is important to teach them to look at:
  • Headings
  • Bold-faced/underlined words
  • Pictures
  • Graphs
Noticing these items help students to think about what they will learn about the topic that they are reading about.

The goal of previewing is to learn as much about a text prior to beginning a book or passage. The act of previewing allows readers to activate background knowledge, or schema, and make predictions that help to generate excitement and motivation for reading.
