Publishing -- Literacy A-Z

Publishing

Publishing is the final phase of the writing process. By definition, it is the time when the process of writing is translated to an end product; however, its importance in the writing workshop cannot be defined by such simple parameters.

The writing workshop values living the “writerly life.” Writers write to share their ideas and work with others. When a piece of writing is published, it becomes available for public consumption. Publishing is the pivotal event that marks the move from “writer” to “author” which helps children to value the writing process in the way that we want them to and encourage them to seek opportunities for writing the way that real authors do.

Publishing is important in the writing workshop because it helps children develop their understanding of why people write. In the writing workshop, children publish at the end of each unit of study, usually between 6 and 12 times per year. Publication is generally followed by some sort of celebration which may be as elaborate as inviting parents in for an author’s tea or as simple as mailing a letter to the person for whom it was intended.
