Running Record -- Literacy A-Z

Running Record

A running record is an on-the-go examination of reading accuracy which enables teachers to assess and analyze reading errors for the purpose of gaining deeper understandings of children’s reading needs.

Done using either a typed text or a blank piece of paper, an evaluator makes a check mark for each word read correctly and notes miscues made as a child reads.

Running records provide teachers important information about student reading patterns and behaviors. Using the information obtained during a running record, teachers perform miscue analysis that helps them to plan targeted instruction for their students.
