Sentence Fluency -- Literacy A-Z

Sentence Fluency

How does writing sound when it is read aloud? How it sounds depends on how it is written. Sentence fluency refers to the rhythm and flow of language. When working on sentence fluency with young writers, teachers help children attend to things like:
  • Awkward word constructions
  • Writing sentences that vary in length
  • Writing sentences with varied beginnings
Drawing attention to sentence fluency helps children become aware of the importance of the sound of writing. Understanding that writing should flow effortlessly and seamlessly allows children to create text that invites readers to enjoy what they have written from start to finish.
