Word Wall
A word wall is an interactive display of words written in bold letters used in the classroom to support the reading and writing development and growth of students. A word wall serves many instructional purposes including:
- Teaching children general principles about words and how they work
- Providing a point of reference for children when they are reading and writing independently
Because word walls are not simply displays of words but an interactive teaching tool, words for the wall are carefully selected for a number of different reasons.
Words on the wall might represent:
- Words that children use often in their writing
- (the, was, were, went, going)
- High frequency words progressing from easy to hard (one letter words like I, a, to two letter words like to, me, it, in, is, am, at, go, no, an, my, he to three letter words like and, the, can, him, her, had, his, but, for, not, you, was, and finally four letter words such as that, then, like, said, have, they, with, your, this, and then.
- Words kids request often like play or school
- Word study words that follow patterns that you are learning about in class
- Children’s names
