Phonemic Awareness -- Literacy A-Z

Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear sounds and manipulate the sounds to make words. It refers to the process of saying sounds for letters and blending the words together to say a word. Children are taught phonemic awareness through activities like rhyming, phoneme deletion and substitution, and syllabification. If a child can produce the beginning, middle, and ending sounds of a given word, she has phonemic awareness.
