Retelling -- Literacy A-Z

Retelling

Retelling is an oral event. When retelling, a reader explains the main ideas of a text. People often use the word “retell” interchangeably with the word “summarize” but the distinction comes in that retelling is purely verbal and summarization is written. Retelling is a powerful comprehension building activity in that it helps readers to think about character, setting, conflict, and important events as well as forces them to consider their level of understanding about the text read.
