Fluency

FluencyFluency is the lifeline to comprehension.  Very often children know that they should be reading with expression but don’t understand that there is more to fluent reading than paying attention to the punctuation.  When explaining fluency to children, it is important to remind them of the three pillars of fluency: reading should be smooth, accurate, AND expressive.  Through defining and demonstrating each of these terms, children work to determine what is missing when they  read aloud.
