Memoir

Memoir Chart
Very often, our knee jerk reaction to guiding  children to a better piece of writing is telling them to add description or detail. For many children, this is too vague a directive to yield meaningful results. In our lesson Writers Use Precise Language, we begin by noticing how writers use specific nouns and then move on to attempting doing the same in our own writing. Adding children’s examples and names to anchor charts helps children feel ownership over the strategy and helps them use it more often in their writing!

Memoir Ideas
Immersion is an important piece of any unit of study in writing. However, as you read examples of published literature that fit the genre you are studying, it is important to capture the story so that children can refer back to the titles often throughout the study. One way that we celebrate memoir titles is by thinking about where authors might have come up with the idea for the stories we share. As we read, we create categories of ideas and add titles that seem to fit those categories.
