About Us

Literacy Builders is about helping children become better readers and writers. We know that great teachers make a great difference in achieving this goal. We have been offering quality professional development to school districts since 2000. Our staff consists of highly skilled literacy coaches, reading specialists, and classroom teachers. We understand the real problems of real teachers in real classrooms and create programs and workshops that are hands-on and practical. We believe that thoughtful discussions about our current teaching practices combined with research-based theory and interactive training lead to more expert teachers. By informing instruction, we enable teachers to empower children to reach their full reading and writing potential.

Our Work in School Districts

At Literacy Builders, our professional relationships begin with discussing the literacy goals identified and established by a school district. Once your objectives are determined, we work within your budget to design workshops tailored to support your staff development needs.  We aim to improve teacher knowledge and skill so that classroom instruction is influenced in meaningful and positive ways.

Our programs are steeped in theoretical background about research-based strategies and instruction. We work collaboratively with teachers to solve the problems unique to delivering literacy instruction to the population of students they serve. We know that it is difficult to affect change when teachers feel forced or reluctant for any reason. We make it our mission to be “infectiously effective.”

An important component of our training includes on-site demonstration lessons. We believe that showing teachers how theory translates into practice increases the likelihood they will retain and use new information. Demonstrations within the walls of their classrooms allow teachers to interact and ask questions to help process and understand new approaches and methods.

Our model for delivering professional development encourages teachers to reflect on their current approaches to literacy and facilitates ongoing dialogue about best practice and practical changes.  Because this is a shared experience among colleagues, it invites productive discussions that affect large scale change. We believe that there is no such thing as one-size fits all instruction and in order to differentiate well, teachers must be well trained and well informed.  We know that expert teaching has a direct impact on student learning and achievement. Our goal, very simply, is to help build expert teachers.
