At Literacy Builders we work hard to make sure our workshops are engaging, hands-on, and highly relevant. Each presentation that we offer is carefully planned to provide a balance of theory, practice, and examples from real classrooms. We infuse our workshops with artifacts from teaching: charts, student work, photographs, and audio-visual recordings. We make it our mission to send you home with practical ideas that you can use in your classroom on Monday. We aim to inspire and invigorate. And we want implementing new strategies to be do-able.
We offer workshops throughout the school year, as well as our Start September Strong series each summer. Check below to find out what is coming soon.

Organizing for a Strong Reading Workshop
Teachers are always looking to stretch their students’ thinking. Reading is the perfect conduit for analytical and critical thought; however, a specified set of structures and teaching practices have to be in place to allow for this kind of thinking to happen. Reading Workshop answers this call. Organizing for a Strong Reading Workshop is intended to help teachers thoughtfully prepare for a year of reading workshop. This session will focus on establishing the rituals and routines that support an effective reading workshop. The information presented will be rooted in theory; however, it will actively engage participants with hands-on activities that they will be able to bring back to their classrooms to support their mini-lessons and small group instruction.

Improving the Quality of Student Writing
Does your students’ writing lack voice? Organization? Is it flat and uninspired? Improving the Quality of Student Writing helps teachers begin to examine what is behind poor writing. This hands-on workshop begins by examining our assessment of student writing. It will explore how to look beyond poor spelling and grammar to recognize strengths and identify weaknesses. Throughout the day, participants will “try out” mini lessons that empower young writers to discover their voice and value their ideas.
This workshop will answer questions such as:
- How can we assess students’ writing in a way that helps us to know what they need to learn as writers?
- What classroom structures best support writing growth and development?
- Which mini lessons are most effective in improving student writing pitfalls like organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and idea development?
- What can we do differently in our individual student conferences to affect stronger, more powerful writing?
