Workshops

Because Literacy Builders is staffed exclusively by teachers and former teachers, we understand what it is like to sit through boring workshops filled with facts and figures that don’t seem relevant to our work. Time is a precious commodity and we all want the most from the time we dedicate to professional development.

At Literacy Builders we work hard to make sure our workshops are engaging, hands-on, and highly relevant. Each presentation that we offer is carefully planned to provide a balance of theory, practice, and examples from real classrooms. We infuse our workshops with artifacts from teaching: charts, student work, photographs, and audio-visual recordings. We make it our mission to send you home with practical ideas that you can use in your classroom on Monday. We aim to inspire and invigorate. And we want implementing new strategies to be do-able.

We offer workshops throughout the school year, as well as our Start September Strong series each summer. Check below to find out what is coming soon.

Teaching Literacy in the 21st Century: Unleashing the Potential of Online Learning Tools to Build Better Readers and Writers

In these digitally dominated times, one of the problems that teachers face is knowing what resources are available on the Web to enhance and support classroom instruction. Teaching Literacy in the 21st Century: Unleashing the Potential of Online Learning Tools to Build Better Readers and Writers takes the guesswork out of mining the Internet. This hands-on workshop introduces teachers to great tools such as Glogster, Diigo, Wordles, Wallwisher, and Wikis. Conducted in a lab, participants will learn about a wide range of Web 2.0 tools and how to use them. Ample time will be given to the exploration of recommended sites in order to help teachers feel more comfortable using these tools and envision their potential in their classrooms. By the end of this engaging workshop, educators will achieve new levels of familiarity and comfort with cutting edge resources that will elevate their current literacy instruction to new levels and ready them to embrace technology as a tool for improving reading and writing instruction.
